Portsmouth Reaction: Latics left a long way from home

Feature by Paul Farrington
Updated Sunday, 1st November 2009

A 4-0 defeat against a side with only five Premier league goals before kick off was not what the Latics were looking for just a week after taking Burnley's 100% home record.

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

The performance was not what we were looking for and we were in a situation we've experienced before. Portsmouth had gathered a good bit of momentum following their cup win in the week, and when the time came to impose ourselves on the ball we didn't.

There are no excuses for the way we started the game and didn't reach our standards.

The reality is that sometimes you need a little bit of luck, in order to get back in the game, but unfortunately nothing went our way, and you have to say that Portsmouth worked hard to get their result, which they deserved.

Our pattern of play didn't show and we suffered as a consequence, and then their goals came at key moments which prevented us reacted in the way we normally do.

We've had enough games so far this season to gain experience, but we'll make sure that after this we'll be a stronger side and learn from the game.

Overall it's another of those painful lessons we need to come through to help us fulfil our potential.

Paul Hart

I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. It was refreshing to get something from the work we have put in. Dindane's performances have been just as good but today he got the goals.

He was desperate to score - all strikers are. He's questioned himself but we have stood by him. All my strikers have worked hard but Aruna is very hard on himself.

He is very strong and he causes problems for defenders and the goals are the icing on the cake for him. Fred also took his goal very well. He [Piquionne] took a knock on the back of the neck but he is fine.
