Big clubs bend work permit rules

By Paul Farrington
Updated Friday, 2nd January 2009

Serbian duo Zoran Tosic and Adem Ljajic have been granted work permits to join Manchester United despite having only twelve international caps between them.

Hendry Thomas on the other hand was not allowed to move to Wigan during the summer because he had failed to meet the international criteria, despite captaining his country at the Olympics and holding 21 full international caps.

The matter became farsical as Thomas was chosen for the Olympics under 23 side, ahead of the full national team.

This has somewhat frustrated Latics manager Steve Bruce who may now only sign Thomas during the summer when he has amassed enough games for the Honduran national side.

The United duo also do not satisfy the international criteria with 21 year old Tosic sitting on 12 international caps whilst 17 year old Ljajic has just a handful of under 21 international appearances.
