Chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that he has agreed a verbal deal with Steve Bruce to become the next manager of Wigan Athletic and the deal should be completed before the Arsenal fixture.

Steve Bruce
Whelan said: "We will have a meeting with Steve on Monday and we are hoping we can make an announcement on Monday or Tuesday.

"We look like we have a contract agreed but nothing has been signed. There is no doubt from the very start when we approached he was keen to come to Wigan."

A huge compensation fee of around £3 million is said to be needed to free Bruce from Birmingham, although the future of his assistant Eric Black is less certain.

He is wanted by Bruce at the JJB but the Brummies are threatening to put him on gardening leave if Black is to join Wigan. This would mean he couldn't work for the club until next season.

Perhaps if the £3 million figure being paid for Bruce had been put towards a striker pre-August, we wouldn't be in the mess at the moment.
