Jewell surely tempted by Norwich raid

By Paul Farrington
Thursday, 19th May 2005
Latics boss Paul Jewell has begun his search for players as he looks to keep Wigan Athletic in the Premiership next season, and there are a good few targets at freshly relegated Norwich City.
Canaries boss Nigel Worthington has denied that the club is facing a clear out of its best stars following their relegation.

Phil Mulryne, Marc Edworthy, Graham Stuart and Danny Crow have already been told to find new clubs and Thomas Helveg is expected to follow them out the door.

Norwich Striker Dean Ashton
Worthington said: "All the players I'm releasing have already been released. Everybody else will be here for next season.

"I'm expecting all of them to be reporting back for training in late June."

However players like Dean Ashton, Robert Green and Damien Francis do not want to lose a year of their career back in the Championship.

These three would be superb additions to the Latics squad.

Goalkeeper Green may be out of the Latics range as he has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United, whilst Francis has taken the fancy of Stuart Pearce at Manchester City.

Former Crewe striker, Dean Ashton on the other hand would fancy a move back up North and another crack at the Premiership.

The 22 year old managed to net seven goals in his fifteen games for City and has already shown he is more than capable at the top level.

A fee of four million, slightly more than City paid for the striker, would most likely see him at the JJB.

Darren Huckerby, Leon McKenzie and Adam Drury could also be potential targets.

Meanwhile the Latics have also been linked with a move for Fulham midfielder Lee Clark. The 32 year old is out of contract this summer and is looking for a new club.

Jewell has targeted Clark before but was turned down, and may be reluctant to take the player on board.
