Latics given Martinez permission

By Paul Farrington
Updated Thursday, 4th June 2009

Wigan Athletic have been given permission to speak to Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez over the vacant manager's position at the DW Stadium.

The thirty-five year old Spaniard has been at the top of chairman Dave Whelan's wish list since the news of Steve Bruce's departure broke just over a week ago.

A club statement read: "Wigan Athletic Football Club can announce that it has been given permission by Swansea City Football Club to speak to their manager, Roberto Martinez about the vacant manager's position."

It is hoped that Martinez could well be installed at Latics manager as early as tomorrow to allow him plenty of time to focus on incoming transfer targets over the summer.
