Latics set to appoint Martinez

By Paul Farrington
Updated Wednesday, 3rd June 2009

The national press are today reporting that Roberto Martinez is set to turn down an offer from Celtic to replace the outgoing Steve Bruce as Wigan Athletic manager.

The popular Spaniard is certainly the first choice amongst Wigan fans who have watched his success at Swansea City with admiration.

An announcement is expected today and it is likely that a press conference confirming Martinez as Latics boss could be hot on the heels of Sunderland confirming Bruce as their new manager.

The Sun is today reporting that Martinez is going to turn down Celtic to take up the hot seat at the JJB Stadium.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan said: "Martinez's success at Swansea is certainly no surprise to me. He is a real gentleman and was a quality footballer when he played for Wigan all those years ago. I liked the way he conducted himself back then - and now."

A quick appointment would also help team affairs with Martinez able to stamp his authority on transfers with much of the summer remaining.
