Statman: Portsmouth Away

By Kev Robinson
Friday, 5th January 2007
When the numbers of Portsmouth and Wigan were pulled out of the goldfish bowls at The FA headquarters, the two premiership clubs were set to face each other in the cup for the first time ever.
There have, in fact, only been a limited number of competitive meetings between Pompey and the Latics and all have come in the league. The three most recent games have come in the Premiership, with Portsmouth winning the last two and Wigan the other.

Before that you have to go way back to 1983 for the last time the two clubs met in a goalless draw down at their place.

The overall record for games between the two clubs sees Portsmouth come out on top, winning five of the nine games played- just over half. Wigan have won just two while there have been two draws.
Jason Roberts scored in Wigan's last win over Pompey

The most recent Wigan win came last season, where goals from Pascal Chimbonda and Jason Roberts secured a 2-0 victory at Fratton Park. Pompey have, though, been victorious in the two games since then by a single goal.

Matty Taylor got the winner from the penalty spot in the final game at the JJB Stadium last season, whilst a single Benjani
Mwaruwari strike was enough to secure three points in the third game of the current campaign.

Wigan
's only over win was in February 1979 and with a score of 2-0 in the old Fourth division. Of the five games at Fratton Park, the home team have won two, Wigan one and twice the game has finished without a winner.

The nine games between the two teams have certainly not been awash with goals and there have been just 15 goals scored, which averages out at about 1.6 per game.

Portsmouth
have got 8 (av. 0.89 per game) of those, and Wigan 7 (av. 0.78 per game). Goals at Portsmouth have been even with 3 (av. 0.6 per game) scored each.

The highest scoring game has seen just three goals, with Portsmouth twice winning 2-1, both away from home. The biggest wins have both come with 2-0 victories from Wigan, once at home and once away and in six of the nine games, one team has failed to score at all.

The recent statistics do not look good for Wigan. The Latics have not won in seven games and are on a dismal run of 5 straight defeats. Portsmouth, on the other hand, are nine unbeaten at home and have lost just one of their last eight games.

Last season neither club really embarked on an FA Cup run, Portsmouth went out immediately at the hands of Ipswich via a 1-0 Portman Road defeat, whilst Wigan, after knocking Leeds out in the third round via penalties, fell to a 1-0 defeat at the City of Manchester Stadium.
