Many have predicted that Steve Bruce will return to his roots one day to become Newcastle manager and this may be true, however, Chairman Dave Whelan does not believe Bruce will do this with current Newcastle owner Mike Ashley at the helm and Whelan has hinted that the Manchester United job is high on Bruce's wish list.
To credit Bruce, the work he has done for the club is nothing short of magnificent. Taking over in November 2007 when the club was second bottom of the Premier League and two points off bottom place Derby County, Bruce has turned the club from relegation certainties, to UEFA Europa hopefuls, all in the space of a year and a half.
Whelan has stated that his work at the club will more than likely be being monitored by senior officials at Manchester United and will be one of the favourites when Sir Alex Ferguson decides to call it a day.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Whelan said:
"There's no chance of Steve going to Newcastle while Ashley is involved, if you ask him he will say the same.
"There's no doubt he'll leave us but it will be to join one of the big four.
"There's only one job that Steve is really, really interested in and that's not too far away from the JJB Stadium.
"When Sir Alex Ferguson decides he's had enough at Old Trafford then I fear that Manchester United will come in for Steve."
At the current moment in time, Manchester United are enjoying success in most areas with Ferguson showing no plans to retire. This means that Steve Bruce could be at the club for a few more years to come and I'm sure he, and Whelan, will have huge ideas for the direction of the club.
