Whelan set to rename the club

By Paul Farrington
Updated Wednesday, 1st April 2009

Following on from the change of name for the stadium last week, Latics' owner Dave Whelan is set to rename the club for one season to help promote his newly formed fitness company.

The former JJB owner who is now in charge of DW Fitness is hoping that by renaming the club DW Fitness Athletic, awareness of his new company will mushroom.

DW Fitness recently launched and have purchased the fitness clubs from JJB Sports for a fee of around £83 million.

Ryan Heaps, spokesman for DW Fitness is quoted:
"A change of name has been on Mr Whelan's mind for quite some time as he wants to optimise the chances of his new business.

"We are presently in discussions with the Premier league, but hope to make a full announcement shortly."

It is unclear whether supporters will take to the new name, with Wigan Athletic have a short but very proud history.

A change to DW Fitness Athletic, even for one season is likely to upset fans, and invite ridicule from opposition supporters.
