Zaki happy with first season progress

By Michael Goodman
Monday, 16th February 2009
Amr Zaki has hit out at critics after failing to score in open play since October and believes he can hit the goal trail again.

Zaki started the season well, scoring on his Premier League debut against West Ham and scoring consistently up until October where he last scored in open play, a wonder goal which put Wigan 2-1 up at Anfield. Speculation surrounded Zaki about his future with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool among a whole host of clubs linked with the Egyptian.

This could be the reason Zaki has seemingly become unsettled but he has slammed critics of him failing in England. Wigan officials will be trying to snap up Zaki after interest has cooled and, given his recent form, his parent club Zamalek could be willing to lower his asking price.

Quoted in the Wigan Evening Post, On-loan Zaki said "How come I failed when I trail high-profile stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Robinho only by one goal in the goalscorers' table?"

Zaki added: "This is my first season in England and I reckon that I have done well. Some players might stay on the bench for six months or so until they make their Premier League debut.

"But I have taken part in 99 per cent of Wigan's games this term, and I have become their top scorer."

Many Wigan fans would love to see Zaki become a permanent fixture at the club in the summer but it is just a case of waiting and trying to negotiate a good deal with the Egyptian club.
